FA charges Nottingham Forest’s Toffolo over betting breaches

The English Football Association (FA) has charged Nottingham Forest defender Harry Toffolo with 375 separate breaches of its betting rules.

All breaches took place between 22 January 2014 and 18 March 2017, with Toffolo allegedly placing a series of bets.

The breaches relate to FA Rule E8, which states any player, match official or coach must not bet, either directly or indirectly, on any matters related to football anywhere in the world.

The FA did not disclose further details at the time, with Toffolo having until 19 July to provide a response.

Toffolo, who joined Premier League club Nottingham Forest in 2022, was playing for several clubs on loan during the period.

Loaned out by Norwich City, he played for Swindon Town, Rotherham United, Peterborough United and Scunthorpe United. All these clubs ply their trade in the lower leagues, outside the top-tier Premier League.

Nottingham Forest is yet to issue a response to the charges.

Episode 19: Looking at Ontario’s legal gaming market with Paul Burns

Brendan Bussmann and Brandt Iden dive headfirst into Canada’s only open betting and gaming market with Paul Burns of the Canadian Gaming Association (CGA) in episode 19 of the World Series of Politics.

Paul shares his thoughts on the early stages of Ontario’s regulated market, pointing out that a strong channelisation rate suggests the Canadian province is making a successful leap from a grey to white market.

This, he explains, has levelled the field when it comes to advertising. That hasn’t prevented the naysayers from massing, however.

One of the opposition parties in the Ontario parliament has put forward a bill to ban gambling advertising – even though gaming only accounts for 3% of total ads shown in the country.

Kentucky to launch legal sports betting on 7 September

Kentucky will launch legal retail sports betting on 7 September, with online wagering to follow on 28 September.

The schedule was agreed yesterday (10 July) by the state’s governor, Andy Beshear, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) and state lawmakers. This means Kentuckians can begin placing legal sports bets in less than 60 days.

This followed a KHRC meeting where members unanimously approved emergency administrative regulations to govern sports betting. Governor Beshear immediately signed off on these at Red Mile, a gaming and racing venue eligible to apply to be a sports betting location.

The 7 September launch date for retail comes just days before the start of both the 2023 NFL and collegiate football seasons.
