Marese O’Hagan speaks to Luka Pataky, chief product officer computer vision at Sportradar, about how Sportradar’s computer vision technology could revolutionise sports betting for good.

In a market as crowded as sports betting, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies like computer vision must continually reinvent themselves in order to remain relevant.

Arguably, it has a well-founded basis in this space, having begun as a completely different project close to 10 years ago.

“Before this role, I was head of innovation at Sportradar, and that’s how we started this computer vision journey as well – it was an innovation project that actually grew,” says Pataky.

Pataky acknowledges that similar technologies have been around for a long time, existing well outside the realms of sports betting.

“It’s not a new area,” he admits. “Computer vision has been around for decades and in some industries it has been used a lot – manufacturing, production lines.”

Sportradar launches AI-led Insight Tech Services suite

Sportradar has announced the launch of Insight Tech Services, a suite of standalone artificial intelligence (AI) led solutions for in-house use by sportsbook operators.

Insight Tech Services has been launched as a complement to Sportradar’s Managed Trading Services (MTS), and features trading, risk management and marketing tools.

It has been designed to allow operators to optimise performance and achieve a deeper understanding of their business and their customers through AI solutions.

Sportradar raises guidance after US segment turns Q3 profit

Sportradar raised its full-year guidance after it reported a 30.7% revenue increase to €178.8m and said its US segment turned a profit in Q3.

Sportradar reported that revenue from the United States was up by 61.2% to €31.6m.

“This growth was driven by a strong increase of US betting services, driven by cross-selling non-data products to betting operators as well as benefiting from our customers’ growth as a result of a development in the underlying market and new states legalising betting,” the group said.

Rest-of-world betting services was the largest segment of the business, with revenue up 28.4% from Q3 of 2021.

This, Sportradar said, was mostly due to clients using more products in which Sportradar receives a higher revenue share, such as as managed betting services.

Fanatics hires Brandt Iden as VP of government affairs

Fanatics Betting and Gaming has hired former Michigan legislator Brandt Iden as its new vice-president of government affairs, as the business edges closer to launching its betting product.

Iden was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2014, until 2020 when he reached the state term limit. During this time he spearheaded the efforts to legalise both sports betting and online casino gaming in the state.

He then joined Sportradar, where he was head of government affairs during a period in which the business went public on the Nasdaq exchange.

Now, he joins Fanatics ahead of the apparel brand’s long-rumoured launch of a sports betting operation.

Sportradar gains sub-licence for ATP tennis data

Sportradar has agreed a deal with Tennis Data Innovations (TDI) and IMG, allowing it access to a sub-licence for ATP tennis data.

This new partnership focuses on the creation of a new secondary feed, which will grant access of betting-related services based on official ATP Tour and ATP Challenger Tour scores to a number of bookmakers worldwide.

The new feed will deliver scores directly from the umpire’s chair and offer complete and uninterrupted coverage of events across the whole season. Consequently, this will allow bookmakers to ensure more stable and reliable in-play betting markets and improve customer experience.

The data in the new feed is delivered in parallel with the existing official fast data feed which was from IMG Arena. By offering an alternative feed to bookmakers, the reach of official data is expanded and it increases the access to tennis betting experiences powered by official scores.

Sportradar to provide data for XLMedia affiliate sites

Sportradar has entered into a multi-year sports betting data partnership with affiliate giant XLMedia.

Under the deal, Sportradar will serve as the official sports data provider to XLMedia through the delivery of a range of digital products and services.

XLMedia will leverage Sportradar’s real-time sports data products for North American and international sports properties across its owned and operated digital properties including SportsBettingDime, SaturdayTradition, SaturdayDownSouth, CrossingBroad, EliteSportsNY and Canadian Sports Betting.

Sportradar will also provide a selection of visualisation tools such as widgets and live match trackers to help enhance XLMedia’s editorial content.

In addition, Sportradar will supply betting odds and insights to support XLMedia with a rising demand for sports betting across its network of websites.

Sportradar granted sublicence, will stop scouting in Genius-FDC settlement

Sportradar’s legal dispute against Genius Sports and the Football DataCo (FDC) has reached a resolution, with the parties agreeing out of court that Sportradar will receive a sublicence for English football data, but that it must stop unofficial scouting.

Under the terms of the settlement, Sportradar will be granted a sublicence that will grant access to a delayed secondary feed until 2024. At the same time, Sportradar will cease its unauthorised in-stadium data collection activities.

The case, which dates back to February 2020, challenged the English and Scottish football data licensing regime. The framework was established in May 2019 when Genius signed a landmark agreement with FDC that granted the data business exclusive rights to collect, license and distribute live data from the Premier League, the Football League and the Scottish Professional Football League. The case was heard by the Competition Appeal Tribunal.

Sportradar pens deal with European Table Tennis Union

Sportradar’s Integrity Services unit has entered into a bet monitoring agreement with the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU), the governing body of table tennis in Europe.

Sportradar will monitor key events, including matches in the European Championships, as well the as the men’s and women’s Champions League.

This will be done through Sportradar’s Universal Fraud Detection System (UFDS), its in-house bet monitoring system.

The UFDS is already active, having monitored the 2022 European Championships in Munich last month.

Through the system, a global team of integrity professionals will analyse the betting patterns of matches for abnormalities, allowing for suspicious activity to be flagged for further investigation.

Sportradar shares up 15% after raising full-year revenue guidance

Data provider Sportradar’s share price rocketed after it raised its full-year revenue guidance for 2022.

The announcement came as part of its second-quarter financial report, in which the provider also revealed that its revenue for the three months to 30 June was €177.2m, up 23.0% year-on-year.

In total, €29.1m of Sportradar’s revenue came from the US, up by 66.3% as the US market continued to expand. Rest-of-world betting services brought in €95.5m, up by 20.6%. This, the business said, was mostly due to more focus on “higher-value-add” services such as managed betting services.

Rest-of-world audiovisual services to betting operators came to €39.7m, up by just short of 10% thanks mostly to new customers.

Other operations brought in a further €12.9m.

The business then paid €43.4m for purchased services and data licences, up 33.1%, plus €64.4m in personnel expenses, up 37.6%, €21.2m in other operating income, a slight increase, and €49.2m in depreciation and amortisation, up by 75…

Sportradar announces tech and content partnership with Turkish Basketball

Sports data business Sportradar has announced a new multi-year tech and content agreement with the Turkish Basketball Federation (TBF).

Services included in the deal include data collection; a fraud detection system, and the installation of motion-based AI video capture camera technology.

This will be distributed across a number of TBF leagues in 27 venues in the country; betting video content and data will be distributed both domestically and internationally by Sportradar.

The agreement comprises the first-tier Turkish Basketball Super League (BSL), second-tier Turkish Basketball First League (TBL), as well as all cup competitions, which includes the Presidential Cup.
