Aspire prepares for a new era

Aspire Global has divested its B2C operations to become a focused B2B business which in turn becomes part of a formidable proposition now NeoGames has acquired the supplier. But that B2C heritage will be vital to ensuring it continues its rapid growth trajectory, says CEO Tsachi Maimon.

Tsachi Maimon was named chief executive of Aspire Global in 2013. At that time the business brought in about €25m (£21.3m) annually. Eight years later, it posted revenue of €213.3m for 2021.

When Maimon joined, he oversaw a B2C business which contributed the bulk of revenue. By the end of 2021, the company had sold off all its consumer-facing operations, which were snapped up by Esports Technologies in a €65.5m deal.

On 17 June, Aspire was then acquired by an even larger entity, with ilottery specialist NeoGames completing a public offer to take charge of the company for €402.3m.

Key industry players partner for women’s sports research

A group of leading industry groups and businesses have joined forces to carry out long-term research exploring the growth in women’s sports.

Entain, Stats Perform, the International Betting Integrity Association and the All-In Diversity Project will work in collaboration with the German Sports University of Cologne to conduct the research.

The initiative will focus on the links between the popularity of women’s sports, betting on women’s sports and rising numbers of female sports bettors.

The group will work to publish its findings ahead of football’s Fifa Women’s World Cup 2023, which will take place in Australia and New Zealand.

Confirmation of the new research project comes as the 2022 Uefa European Women’s Football Championship is taking place in England.

The tournament is currently at the quarter-final stage, with England, Spain, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Belgium, France and the Netherlands having progressed from the group stage.

Gambet is a “failed operation”, DC councilmember says

A council meeting in Washington DC has branded Gambet as a “failed operation” after the sports betting monopoly has failed to bring in its projected revenue.

At a meeting on July 13, DC council chairperson Kenyan McDuffie said that Gambet’s issues were present from the time of launch.

“Since its launch in 2020, DC’s sports wagering program has experienced repeated operational challenges,” said McDuffie. “The challenges directly contributed to delays in getting retail locations up and running, as well as the inability to generate a robust customer base for the district’s mobile app, Gambet DC.”

High school Spire Institute among Ohio betting licence applicants

A number of new organisations have applied for Ohio sports betting licences, including Bet365 and Tipico as online providers, and high school Spire Institute – alongside a number of professional sports teams – for a proprietor licence.

Spire Institute is an Ohio sports-focused high school, with its athletic programs attracting top recruits including basketball star LaMelo Ball. The organisation also offers a general sporting development programs and operates sporting complexes on its grounds, outside of its presence as a high school.

Under Ohio’s sports betting laws, sporting organisations or land-based gaming venues may offer betting in the state, partnering with online operators for an online product.

Peru votes to legalise betting and igaming

Peru's Congress has voted to legalise online gambling and sports betting in the country, establishing a new regulated framework for the sectors.

The approval came on 15 July, after a parliamentary debate. A law to approve the verticals received 91 votes in favour, and zero opposing votes.

The new law will become the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru (Mincetur), the country’s foreign trade body, which will also regulate its enactment in Peru.

The gaming tax will be set at 12% of each operator’s tax base – which is net income minus maintenance costs – and will be collected monthly.

Maintenance taxes will be 2% of an operator’s monthly income.

Sunat, Peru’s tax body, administers the tax.

Operators with the appropriate licence will be allowed to offer bonuses for online gaming, as long as the bonuses cannot be exchanged for money.

Genius to distribute NCAA data in new partnership with Scorebreak

Sports technology business ScoreBreak has announced a new partnership with data distributor Genius Sports covering collegiate sports data, soon after the business became the official supplier of data from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

ScoreBreak operates a video synchronisation engine that will work in tandem with Genius’s official statistics, allowing customers to access the stat-driven video content from any internet-connected device.

Detroit casino revenue down 8.8% YoY in June

The three commercial casinos in Detroit, Michigan, posted $98.6m (£83.4m/€98.2m) in total revenue during June, an 8.8% drop on the same month last year.

Revenue from the MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino and Penn National’s Hollywood Casino at Greektown was down from $108.1m in June 2021 and also 9.3% lower than $108.7m in May of this year.

MGM retained top spot in the Michigan city with a 49% share of the market, ahead of MotorCity on 34% and Greektown with 17%.

Breaking down the monthly performance, table games and slots were responsible for $98.2m of all revenue for the month, but this was 7.2% lower than in June of last year.

MGM led this area of the market with $48.3m in revenue, up by 4.3% year-on-year. However, revenue at MotorCity was down 9.8% to $33.5m, while Greektown’s revenue dropped 26.6% to $16.4m.

The three casinos paid $8.0m in gaming taxes, as well as $11.7m worth of wagering taxes and development agreement payments to the City of Detroit.

GLMS files 287 suspicious betting alerts in Q2

The Global Lottery Monitoring System (GLMS) sent out 287 suspicious betting alerts and notifications to members during the second quarter of 2022, the majority of which were related to football.

Some 226 of the alerts raised during the three months to 30 June, were created before a match started, while 44 alerts were triggered after the end of events and 17 during play.

The GLMS said 185 alerts were ‘green notifications’, which refers to an alert based on suspicious odds movements that later could be explained away.

A further 82 were mid-level amber alerts and 14 code red, which relate to the most serious alerts such as specific allegations of match-fixing. The remaining 33 alerts were classed in the ‘others’ category and included requests for information from members and partners.

Football was by far the sport of most concern during Q2, accounting for 252 of all alerts, some way ahead of esports on 14 alerts, 13 for basketball, four for ice hockey, tennis with two and one each for..
