Spain online gambling revenue up 11% in Q2

Online gross gambling revenue (GGR) in Spain amounted to €346.3m (£290.1m/$386.4m) in Q2, an increase on the previous year but slightly lower than the opening quarter of this year, despite the opening of UEFA's Euro 2024 in June.
The Q2 total is 10.8% higher than €312.6m in Q2 of last year, according to Spain’s regulator Directorate General for Gambling Regulation (DGOJ). However, the figure – covering the April-June period, is 1.2% behind the $350.7m revenue reported in Q1 this year.

Casino was again the main source of online GGR in Spain, generating €171.7m, or 49.6%, of all Q2 revenue. This is 14.6% more than last year and also a 2.3% increase from Q1’s total.

Within online casino, slots GGR increased by 19.5% from last year, while live roulette revenue was also up 9.6%. Slots and blackjack revenue also improved quarter-on-quarter but both conventional and live roulette revenue were down.

Spanish gambling revenue up 55.1% year-on-year to €312.6m in Q2

Gross gambling revenue in the second quarter in Spain hiked 55.1% year-on-year to €312.6m (£207.0m/$332.6m), with revenue from sports betting more than doubling.

Total revenue in the second quarter was comfortably ahead of last year and also 2.5% higher than €313.3m in Q1. Data for the three-month period has been released by Spain’s regulator, the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ).

Casino generated the most GGR in Q2 – €149.9m, up 27.9% from last year and 4.5% ahead of Q1.

Slot machine revenue increased by 29.9% year-on-year, while live roulette GGR was 8.9% higher.

Spanish sports betting revenue rockets in Q2

The sports betting segment reported the largest percentage of growth during the quarter. In the three-month period, GGR reached €133.3m, up 118.9% from last year.

Pre-event sports bet GGR was 1.8% higher than in Q2 and live betting GGR also increased by 3.5%. Horse riding bets jumped 22.7% but other sports bets GGR slipped 15.1%.

Spain sanctions 20 operators over illegal gambling in H2

Spanish regulator Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ) sanctioned 20 online operators over illegal gambling activities in the second half of 2022, imposing more than €35.0m (£31.0m/$38.6m) in fines in the process.

According to the ministry of consumer affairs, 20 operators were contacted about “serious or very serious infractions” across online betting and gambling during the six-month period, in relation to breaches of Regulación del Juego (LRJ) gambling law.

Of the operators contacted, seven were flagged for “very serious” infractions and banned from offering online gambling in the country for a period of two years. Each operator was also fined €5.0m, with these penalties totalling €35.0m in H2.

The DGOJ also detected “serious” violations across the other 13 operators, issuing financial penalties that amounted to €560,000.
