Spain gambling revenue jumps 23.6% to €304.2m in Q3

Gross gambling revenue (GGR) in Spain increased by 23.6% year-on-year to €304.3m (£261.2m/€332.3m) in Q3, although this was lower than the second quarter.

The figure was comfortably ahead of €240.8m in Q3 last year. However, the total fell 2.7% short of the €312.6m generated in revenue in Spain during Q2 of this year.

Breaking down the Q3 figures, casino was again the primary source of GGR in Spain. For Q3, casino revenue amounted to €160.3m, up 25.3% on last year representing 52.7% of the whole market.

The highest amount of growth came in the live roulette sector, with GGR up 27.8%. There was also significant growth in the slots segment, with GGR jumping 25.9%.

In terms of quarter-on-quarter performance, blackjack GGR jumped 11.5%, slots 8.1% and live roulette 5.4%. However, conventional roulette GGR fell 2.2% from Q2.

Q3 sports betting revenue exceeds €113.0m

Elsewhere, sports betting revenue increased 22.7% year-on-year to €113.5m, accounting for 37.3% of all GGR on Q3.

Kansas smashes sports betting handle record in November

Kansas set a new sports betting handle record for the third consecutive month in November, with players wagering a total of $260.9m (£204.5m/€237.5m) across online and retail.

The November total surpassed the existing record of $249.7m in October by 4.5%. This was also 40.0% higher than the $186.4m wagered in Kansas in November last year.

Of this total, $251.7m was spent betting online, with the remaining $9.2m wagered at retail sportsbooks across Kansas.

However, record handle was not enough to also push revenue to a record high. In November, sports betting revenue in Kansas hit $8.9m. This was 38.2% behind October’s $14.4m record but 11.3% ahead of $8.0m in November 2022.

Online sports wagering accounted for $8.2m of total revenue in Kansas. A further $753,778 came from betting at retail sportsbooks.

Iowa sports betting handle rises again in November

Players in Iowa wagered $289.7m (£230.5m/€268.8m) on sports during November, up 17.1% on last year and the highest monthly total since January 2022.

The monthly Iowa handle was higher than $247.5m in November 2022 and 13.5% ahead of $255.3m in October this year.

The total was also the most spent since a record $303.3m was wagered in January 2022, some 22 months ago.

Breaking this down, some $265.8m was spent betting with online operators and $23.9m at retail sportsbooks across Iowa.

As for revenue, operators generated a total of $14.1m in November. This was 143.1% higher than $5.8m last year, although the November 2022 figures were hit by multi-million-dollar winning bet payouts to US businessman Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale.

However, the November revenue figure in Iowa was 33.5% behind the $21.2m generated in October this year. This was due to consumers winning significantly more in November ($275.6m) compared to October ($225.3m).

Kentucky online sports wagers reach $323.6m in opening weeks

Consumers in Kentucky spent $323.6m (£257.2m/€300.2m) betting on sports online during the opening weeks of the Bluegrass State’s newly regulated market.

Kentucky launched legal online sports betting on 28 September. This followed the roll out of retail wagering on 7 September, with online delayed as part of a staggered launch.

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) has now published figures for the opening weeks of the market. This data covers the final three days of September and the whole of October.

During this period, online bets amounted to $323.6m. This included $36.8m across the three days of September and $286.8m in October.

Adjusted gross revenue from online betting for the period reached $54.2m. Some $1.5m was generated in the final days of September, while revenue in October hit $52.7m.

New York sets $2.11bn handle record in November

Consumers in New York spent $2.11bn (£1.68bn/€1.96bn) betting on sports online during November, a new record for the state and the highest amount ever bet in any US state in a single month.

The November figure surpassed the existing New York record of $2.01bn set in October this year by 5.0%. New York in October became the first state to take over $2.00bn in legal sports bets in any given month.

The amount wagered in November was also 36.1% ahead of $1.55bn in the same month last year.

Online revenue for the month reached $150.9m. This was 9.3% behind the record $166.3m set in October but 1.8% higher than $148.2m in November 2022.

Flutter Entertainment-owned FanDuel stretched its lead in New York in November. Players spent $923.4m wagering on sports with FanDuel, with revenue reaching $69.2m for the month.

Fitch Ratings forecasts global gaming outlook for 2024 as “neutral”, citing pullback in certain US markets and potential stagnation in Europe.

A new report from Fitch Ratings forecasts the global gaming outlook for 2024 as “neutral”.

It is the second straight year Fitch has selected a “neutral” view for its gaming outlook. Fitch cited “slight pullback” from the “pent-up demand” in the United States as one of the reasons for its classification.

In general, the US is still performing well after a “robust” 2022. However, Fitch’s 6 December report details how regional gaming is showing some indication of stagnation.

Elsewhere, Asia Pacific is flourishing under improved demand thanks to the mass market returning after the Covid-19 pandemic. Singapore, meanwhile, continues to “perform above expectations”.

Australian Senate approves credit card online gambling ban legislation

The Australia Senate has approved legislation to prohibit the use of credit cards for online gambling in the country, with a near-blanket ban set to come into effect within six months.

The Interactive Gambling Amendment (Credit and Other Measures) Bill 2023 was introduced in September. This legislation seeks to ban credit cards and other credit-related products, as well as digital currencies, in Australia.

Australia’s House of Representatives passed the bill last month, allowing it to progress to the Senate. Today (6 December), the Senate also approved the legislation, clearing the way for it to pass into law.

The country already has a ban in place on gambling with credit cards at land-based venues. This means the bill effectively places a blanket ban on credit card gambling across Australia.

BetMGM expects to reach $500m EBITDA by 2026

BetMGM aims to reach 25% market share in the US by 2026, as well as delivering $500.0m (£396.1m/€462.2m) in positive EBITDA.

BetMGM set the 2026 goal after revealing it expects to be at the higher end guidance for 2023. In the current financial year, revenue should be between $1.80bn and $2.00bn, according to CEO Adam Greenblatt.

At an investor presentation yesterday (4 December), Greenblatt detailed how BetMGM, a joint-venture by Entain and MGM Resorts International, was expecting to be self-funding from 2024 onwards.

The business sees next year as an investment period, having already proved profitability in 2023. While it expects to achieve a profitable H2 2023, BetMGM expects negative EBITDA for 2024 in what it bills as an “investment year”.

Rhode Island betting handle and revenue reach 10-month high in October

Sports betting handle and revenue in Rhode Island hit a 10-month high in October, although the Ocean State reported year-on-year declines across both.

Rhode Island players spent a total of $45.8m (£36.1m/€42.2m) betting on sports in October. This was down 25.2% from $61.2m in October 2022 but 21.8% more than September this year.

It was also the highest monthly total since a record $62.3m was bet in January 2023.

Of this total, $36.4m was wagered online and $9.5m at retail sportsbooks. This includes $6.3m at Twin River and $3.2m at Tiverton Casino.

Rhode Island revenue slips year-on-year

Turning to revenue and it was a similar year-on-year story for Rhode Island. The $4.5m posted in October was 8.2% less than $4.9m in the same month last year but 28.6% more than $3.5m in September.

It was also noted that the October figure was the second highest of the calendar year. The $5.2m generated in January is the only higher monthly figure so far in 2023.

Maine sports wagers surpass $37.0m in opening month

Consumers in Maine spent more than $37.0m (£29.1m/€34.0m) betting on sports during the first month of legal wagering in the Pine Tree State.

Total handle in the month amounted to $37.6m. Maine launched its market on 3 November, with the reporting period covering the 27 days to the end of November.

Players won $32.7m from wagering during the month. After discounting $137,112 in voided bets and $82,342 in federal excise tax, this left adjusted gross receipts of $4.6m.

In addition, the State of Maine Gambling Control Unit says $464,152 was collected in other tax. Operators pay at a rate of 10% of adjusted gross receipts.

Looking at operators active in the opening month, only DraftKings and Caesars were live in November. Both launched in Maine on the market’s opening day on 3 November.

Nevada gambling revenue exceeds $1.3bn in October

Gambling revenue in Nevada increased 3.1% year-on-year to $1.32bn (£1.04bn/€1.21bn) in October, helped by growth across multi-denomination slots, baccarat and sports pool betting.

Revenue was ahead of $1.28bn in October 2022 and also 3.9% more than $1.27bn in Nevada in September this year. It was also the best October revenue total in the history of the state’s market.

Slots drew the lion’s share of revenue, generating $894.9m in revenue in October. This was 2.0% higher than in the same month last year.

Multi-denomination slots were the single highest revenue source with $527.8m for the month, up 16.3%. Incidentally, almost all other slot games reported a decline in revenue, including penny slots, with revenue dropping 11.7% to $271.9m

PointsBet chief executive Sam Swanell has outlined a focus on technology to deliver growth in Australia and Canada following the group’s departure from the US.

Swanell told investors at the AGM that PointsBet remains on course to break even this year and deliver growth in FY25. The CEO reiterated the rationale behind the $225.0m sale of its US business to Fanatics. He also gave an update on growth targets in its remaining Australian and Canadian markets.
