Study shows gambling ads increased threefold on Premier League opening weekend

Almost 30,000 gambling adverts featured across television, radio and social media during the opening weekend of this season’s English Premier League, according to a report by the University of Bristol.
Funded by a GambleAware grant, the research found gambling adverts almost trebled since last year. The 2024-25 Premier League season kicked off on 16 August, with games taking place until 19 August.

During the opening round of games, the university recorded 29,145 adverts, compared to 10,999 the previous year. This includes pitch-side hoardings and shirt logos featuring on live televised matches and news coverage of games.

Televised gambling messages rocket 240%
Television appeared to be the main area of concern for researchers. The report found that the number of gambling messages that appeared during the six televised games across the opening weekend totalled 23,690, up 240% from last year.

Genius Sports set to extend Premier League data deal until 2029

Genius Sports has been chosen as the successful bidder to extend its official betting data partnership with Football DataCo, which holds data rights to the English Premier League (EPL).

DataCo also holds rights to data from the English Football League (EFL), containing the Championship, League One and League Two, as well as all leagues overseen by the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL), including the Scottish Premiership.

Genius has now entered into an exclusive period of negotiation with DataCo as it seeks to get the extension over the line. The renewed agreement is still subject to contract and the approval of the leagues and their clubs.

Genius has exclusively supplied low latency data to DataCo from the EPL, EFL and SPFL since 2019. The current deal expires at the end of the 2024-25 season, with the new contract set to last until 2029.

The fresh deal will see Genius Sports continue to distribute data from over 4,000 UK football fixtures per season.

France’s LFP sanctions footballers for breaching betting ban

Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), the governing body for football in France, has issued sanctions to 35 players for breaching a ban on sports betting.

The LFP’s disciplinary committee announced the sanctions after the players were ruled to have violated LFP and French Football Federation (FFF) regulations during the 2021-22 season.

Both the LFP and FFF have in place a blanket ban on professional players betting on football. The ban applies to French players and footballers from overseas playing their club football in France.

This was the fourteenth occasion sanctions were issued since the LFP began working with national gambling regulator l’Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ) in the 2013-14 season. LFP did not disclose each individual breach of regulations.

Blaze and Parimatch score Brazilian football sponsorship deals

Blaze and Parimatch have agreed to sponsorships with Brazilian football clubs Atlético Clube Goianiense and Botafogo, after the collapse of efforts to introduce a locally regulated sports betting market in the country.

Campeonato Brasileiro Série B side, Atlético Clube Goianiense, announced the sponsorship with Blaze, a sportsbook online provider. Blaze will feature on the club’s kits as the main sponsor.

The length of the deal is currently undisclosed.

Meanwhile, Campeonato Brasileiro Série A team Botafogo agreed a two-year deal for online sports provider Parimatch to become its main shirt sponsor.

Nick van Gorsel, director of operations at Blaze, said that the company is proud to be the new sponsor of Atlético Clube Goianiense.

2022 World Cup breaks betting records, thanks in part to US growth

Betting across the 2022 Fifa World Cup increased by 13% from 2018’s tournament according to OpenBet, while GeoComply noted the final was surpassed only by the Super Bowl in the US.

OpenBet said its performance among European players broke a record, with an engagement level increase of 22%. Canada, a joint host for the 2026 World Cup, recorded a 21% increase for the same metric, also setting a record.

Canada will share hosting duties with the US and Mexico, where the tournament will return to being played over the summer. The Qatar World Cup was organised for November and December due to inhospitable temperatures in June and July.

In North America, OpenBet said World Cup betting was more than double the size of the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball tournaments.

It also found that more 12 million bets were placed on the US team during the World Cup, garnering more than $100m (£82.3m/€94.1m) in stakes.
