Brazil ministry of finance agrees partnerships with match-fixing monitoring bodies

On Tuesday (29 October), Brazil's ministry of finance announced it has agreed to partner with four industry monitoring and integrity organisations to aid the fight against match-fixing.

The Secretariat of Prizes and Bets (SPA), which sits within the ministry of finance, penned Technical Cooperation Agreements (ACTs) with Genius Sports, Sportradar, the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) and the Sports Integrity Global Alliance (Siga and Siga Latin America) to counter fears over match-fixing in Brazil.

The partnerships will last for five years, with the collaborations aiming to strengthen the safety network surrounding the manipulation of sports in Brazil. They will consider the bodies’ learnings and experience in more mature markets like England and Australia.

The agreements will also serve to help the SPA gain knowledge of the betting market in Brazil, educating SPA teams on how to monitor the legal sports betting sector, which is set to go live alongside igamin..

IBIA reports drop in Q3 suspicious betting activity as esports concerns ease

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) has reported a year-on-year decline in the number of suspicious betting alerts it recorded in Q3, while fewer esports cases also led to a quarter-on-quarter drop.

The association’s technology detects and reports incidents of suspicious betting activity, to be shared with leading sports bodies including Fifa, UEFA, ITIA and the IOC, as well as global gambling regulators

In total, the IBIA reported 42 suspicious betting alerts during Q3. This is down from 50 in the last year and a sharp drop from 90 in Q2 this year.

Tennis and football attracted the highest number of suspicious activity in Q3, with each sport leading to 14 alerts in total. The IBIA said such levels are in line with numbers seen in recent years.

Esports was next with 12 alerts made during the period, up from three last year but far fewer than in Q2. A single esports case related to suspicious betting activity across 68 efootball matches played in Q1 and Q2.

Asian Football Confederation partners IBIA to tackle match-fixing

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has entered into a partnership with the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) strengthening its efforts to combat match-fixing across the sport.
Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU), the parties committed to jointly detect irregular betting patterns and suspicious activities in football. The partnership between the AFC and IBIA will run for a period of four years.

The IBIA will deploy its Monitoring and Alert Platform to share real-time data on suspicious betting activity with the AFC. This will strengthen the AFC’s abilities to investigate potential match manipulation.

Both parties also said that the partnership will support the AFC’s goal of creating a secure environment for the sport.

Esports suspicious betting cases rise in IBIA Q2 integrity report

Esports accounted for 54% of suspicious betting activities recorded by the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) in Q2, while the total number of alerts during the quarter jumped 80% year-on-year.
Some 90 suspicious betting alerts were tracked by the IBIA in Q2, according to its latest Integrity Report. This is up from 50 in the previous year and also higher than the 56 initially noted in Q1 this year. However, the Q1 figure has since been revised to 93.

Esports led the way by some distance, compared to just one suspicious esports betting alert sent out in Q2 of last year.

The IBIA noted a single esports case related to suspicious betting activity on 68 esoccer matches played in Q1 and Q2. This, it said, has caused a significant increase in the overall number of esports alerts in 2024, with esports accounting for 50% of all alerts across the first two quarters.

IBIA reports 64.7% increase in Q1 suspicious betting alerts

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) received 56 alerts of suspicious betting during Q1, up 64.7% on the final quarter of 2023.

Additionally, the IBIA’s Q1 figure was 12.0% above the revised total of 50 alerts from the same quarter last year. The alerts came from six sports across 21 countries and five continents.

The IBIA looks at suspicious betting activity to establish potential sports corruption. The IBIA’s members include over 50 companies and more than 125 betting brands. This makes it the largest integrity monitor of its type across the globe.

IBIA chief executive Khalid Ali believes the rising number of alerts is another indicator of ongoing match-fixing problems.

IBIA report highlights role restrictions play in supporting unregulated market

A new report from the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) has highlighted the effect overly-restrictive regulation has on driving players offshore.

The IBIA study, The Availability of Sports Betting Products: An Economic and Integrity Analysis, was prepared by H2 Gambling Capital and developed in partnership with betting assoications in Brazil, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands. It used data from 12 markets where sports betting is regulated.

The research analysed the effects that restrictive and liberal regulated regimes have on player habits. These centred around consumer protection, regulatory oversight, sports integrity and taxation.

The report found a strong correlation between the availability of sports betting products and the proportion of consumers wagering with onshore regulated operators. In markets where players faced few restrictions, the channelisation towards the legal market stood at 90% or more.

IBIA pens sports betting integrity partnership with IXUP

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) has entered into a sports betting integrity partnership with data security and analysis business IXUP.

Under the deal, IBIA and IXUP will explore integrity-compliance products and services for the US market. This includes developing solutions to support operators, regulators and sports governing bodies.

IBIA will promote IXUP’s PlayPause encryption matching network to US member operators. PlayPause is a pilot scheme aggregating state voluntary exclusion lists and sports involuntary exclusion lists into a single real-time API.

In return, IXUP will promote IBIA’s integrity monitoring solution through its relationships with existing US clients. These include sports betting operators, regulators, sports leagues and teams.

IBIA expands Brazilian network with KTO

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) has named KTO, the sports betting brand owned by the KTO Group, as its latest member.

Founded in 2018, KTO currently operates in both Brazil and Peru, with plans to also launch in Chile.

Women’s sports boom raises corruption risk, new report warns

Increased and more widespread monitoring of women’s sport should be considered to help combat match-fixing, according to a new report.

‘Breaking Barriers: Assessing Women’s Sports, Betting, and Integrity Challenges’ looked at the current state of female sports around the world.

Presented this week at iGB L!VE, the study had the support of leading industry organisations, operators and suppliers. These included the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA), All-In Diversity Project (AIDP), Entain, Flutter and Stats Perform.

The report flagged a “dramatic” rise in women’s sport worldwide, accompanied by a similar increase in betting.

IBIA expands membership network with OlyBet

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) has revealed OlyBet, the sports betting brand of Olympic Entertainment Group (OEG), as its latest member.

OlyBet will feed into IBIA’s betting integrity monitoring and alert network, working alongside licensed operators from around the world.

IBIA signs betting integrity deal with Portuguese regulator

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) and the Portuguese Online Betting and Gambling Association (APAJO) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Under the agreement, the IBIA and APAJO will work together on issues related to betting and sports integrity, as well as a safe and sustainable online sports betting environment.

The two associations will discuss areas of cooperation and potential shared projects, with the aim of pooling their expertise on a range of activities.
