Illinois sports betting handle up in August, but hold declines sharply against July

Sports betting revenue in Illinois increased year-on-year in August despite the impact of new tax laws in the state. Monthly handle was also higher than in 2023.
For August, total ‘completed events’ adjusted gross revenue hit $59.2m (£45.5m/€54.6m) in Illinois. This is 26.2% more than last year but 17.0% lower than July. State-wide hold was 6.74%, down from 9.22% in July.

Figures from the Illinois Gaming Board (IGB) show some $57.8m of all revenue came from online betting. The remaining $1.3m was attributed to wagering through retail sportsbooks across the state.

As for spending, total handle for the month amounted to $877.8m. This surpasses last year by 29.8% and also beats July this year by 13.5%.

August is widely regarded as one of the quieter of the summer months due to fewer major league events, although this year benefited from the Olympic Games in Paris, France. College football also starts in late August, as do NFL pre-season games. Players bet $852.9m online during August ..

Illinois regulator tightens wagering and casino advertising rules

Illinois regulators late last week became the latest to revamp advertising and marketing rules for sports betting and casinos. The move follows a trend in the US that regulators say aims to protect minors and those at-risk from potential harms.
The Illinois Gaming Board (IGB) on Thursday (12 September) voted in more strict measures around wagering, casino advertising and video gaming. The new guidelines mirror those in Massachusetts and Ohio. Those two states are recognised to be the most stringent when it comes to advertising and marketing.

The IGB previously did not have such guidelines for casino and video gaming.

The board voted the same day that two US lawmakers introduced legislation that would, in part, create national gambling advertising guidelines.

The overall document now seeks to consider digital sports betting and advertising. But the rules apply to the physical and digital worlds.

IGB CEO Marcus Fruchter said the new rules were designed to “include additional safeg..

Illinois’ proposed high sports betting tax rate could backfire on lawmakers

Illinois' general assembly made a money grab earlier this week, but gambling stakeholders say it could backfire. Lawmakers sent a FY2025 budget that includes a progressive tax rate topping out at 40% to Governor JB Pritzker.

On the face of it, raising the sports betting tax rate seems like a good way for any state to bring in more revenue. But stakeholders say Illinois consumers will likely be the recipients of unintended consequences. During the house budget debate, one Republican representative suggested an appropriations line for funds to treat the Democrats’ unchecked “spending addiction”.

The budget bill is now headed to Pritzker’s desk and it seems like a slam dunk that he will sign it. That, stakeholders say, will seal the fate of Illinois bettors.

“Players are probably going to see fewer promotions and that is not good for the consumer,” West Virginia lawmaker and government affairs chief for Play ‘n Go Shawn Fluharty told iGB. “It could impact the lines and that is ano..

Illinois senate passes “penal”, progressive sports betting tax

Late on Sunday (26 May), Illinois senators passed a FY2025 budget that includes a sports betting tax hike that will most affect the state's biggest operators.

The Sports Betting Alliance (SBA) called the budget an “extremely disappointing decision that will cause real harm”. The proposal nearly triples the tax rate for the most successful operators.

Sunday’s version of the budget, passed by the senate, is different from the house proposal. It would make Illinois the second-most expensive state for wagering operators to do business in.

At the highest end of the scale, the operators with the highest adjusted gross revenue would pay a 40% tax. Only New York’s 51% is higher for a state with a competitive market.

The vehicle for the tax is HB 4951, which did not include the progressive sports betting tax when the house approved it. The bill now goes back to the house for concurrence.

Even smallest operators will pay more

Late Saturday (25 May), the house adjourned until after th..
