Michigan sets $220.7 million gross igaming revenue record in October

Igaming revenue in Michigan reached a record $220.7 million (£174.1 million/€209.0 million) in October, although the Great Lakes state reported a decline within its online sports betting market.

Gross internet gaming and sports betting receipts from commercial and tribal operators in Michigan hit $253.7 million in October. This comfortably surpasses $205.3 million from last year by 23.6% but falls 2.8% short of $261.0 million in September this year.

Total market adjusted gross receipts, which account for promotional spending, hit $208.5 million, according to Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) figures. This beat last year by 24.3% but missed September’s total by 0.7%.

The stand-out highlight for October was record igaming revenue, surpassing the existing all-time high of $215.5m in March this year by 2.4%. Gross igaming receipts were also 37.7% higher than last year and 8.9% above September.

Michigan falls just short of online betting and igaming records in September

Michigan narrowly missed out on new online sports betting and igaming revenue records in September, with the month proving to be the second-best in the Wolverine State’s history.
Figures from the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) show combined online betting and igaming revenue in September hit $261.0m (£200.2m/€240.4m). Reported as ‘gross receipts’, this is 24.1% higher than last year and 16.5% ahead of August.

Adjusted gross receipts, which account for promotional spending in Michigan, was $209.9m. This beat last year’s total by 24.6% and was also 2.5% more than August.

MGCB’s try at examining legal vs illegal activity causing consternation

A new six-page, six-question attestation form issued by the Michigan Gaming Control Board in late April has left some licensed igaming and sports betting suppliers in a corner, unsure how to respond to the open-ended inquiry that the board itself has revealed is more about “information gathering” at this point.

The “Illegal Gaming Attestation Internet Game Content Providers” form may be well-intentioned to stamp out support for illegal actors siphoning business and taxable revenue from Michigan’s legal market, but many stakeholders are concerned. Relationships and involvement in areas where the legal versus illegal activity of igaming is not cut and dried is common. Those operating globally are especially alarmed by some unclear questions and undefined terms. They believe unintended consequences may follow from the Michigan regulators’ methods.

Michigan operators boosted by record monthly igaming receipts

Michigan’s commercial and tribal igaming operators generated record gross receipts of $175.3m (£138.5m/€160.2m) in November, according to the state’s regulator.

Michigan’s total gaming revenue beat the previous record of $171.8m in March and $160.3m in October, the Michigan Gaming Control Board stated. Total igaming handle was not reported.

November’s total online sports betting handle of $568.8m also set a new monthly record – up 6.7% from $533m in October. However, online sports betting receipts fell from $45m to $33.9m versus the previous month.

Accordingly, igaming and sports betting gross receipts totalled $209.2m in November. This represented a 1.9% increase on October’s total.

Combined igaming and internet sports betting adjusted gross receipts (AGR) for Michigan in November totalled $158.1m. This included $157.8m from igaming and just $294,810 from online sports betting.

Michigan online gambling revenue rises 13.2% in August

Combined online sports betting and igaming revenue in Michigan increased 13.2% year-on-year to $175.4m (£141.5m/€164.2m) in August, with this total almost level month-on-month.

Gross internet gaming and sports betting receipts from commercial and tribal operators is ahead of $154.9m in August 2022. It is also only slightly below $176.1m worth of online gambling revenue in Michigan in July this year.

Online casino gaming gross receipts hit $152.2m, up 16.3% on last year but behind July’s $153.9m total.
