Stake.com continues regulated market push with Peru online gaming launch

Crypto gaming specialist Stake.com is expanding its regulated footprint, securing casino and sportsbook licences to launch in the Peru online gaming market.
The rollout of Stake.pe marks the operator’s second regulated LatAm market, after it acquired Betfair Colombia in November last year. This push is going global, as shown by this month’s acquisition of Idealbet, a licensed Italian operator.

“We are delighted to bring Stake to Peru, a country that has a lot of potential for digital growth, which has been evident in recent years,” said Stake’s general manager for Latin America Diana Otalora. “This shows our ambition to provide world-class entertainment to Peruvian customers and to expand our reach in LatAm.”

DC councilmember Trayon White charged with bribery

On Monday (19 August) DC Councilmember Trayon White was charged with bribery after the FBI arrested him on Sunday (18 August). White is accused of taking $156,000 in “kickbacks and cash payment” according to a federal affidavit.
White was a member of the DC Council in 2019 when it agreed to leglalise single-source digital sports betting. DC Lottery partner Intralot got the wagering contract without a bid process. White was absent the day of that vote, but in June 2024 voted to pass a budget that opened the market.

Throughout the 2024 process, however, stakeholders were unsure how White, who was often absent from meetings, would vote. In the end, he lined up in favour and the budget unanimously passed.

According to a federal affidavit filed Friday and unsealed Monday, White took cash and other bribes to convince city government employees to extend contracts for vendors that would benefit at-risk youth. White, from Ward 8, an impoverished part of the District, has been a champion fo..

Colombia government credits online gambling for supporting GDP growth in Q2

Colombia’s igaming market revenue reached COP10bn (£1.9bn/€2.2bn/$2.5bn) in Q2, with the sector credited as a key component of the nation’s economic growth over the quarter.
National gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 2.1% over Q2 and the country’s National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) pointed to Colombian online gambling as one of the activities that most helped that growth.

DANE director Piedad Urdinola highlighted the impact of recent sporting activities in particular as driving a rise in online betting. In this summer’s Copa América tournament the Colombia national team reached the final.

Marco Emilio Hincapié, president of Colombian gambling regulator Coljuegos, revealed that sports betting was indeed the largest contributor to the online betting sector, accounting for 47% of total gross gaming revenue (GGR) nationally.

Localised games such as bingo and casino were second with 33% of GGR, while lottery games AstroSport and Baloto generated 13% and 7% respect..

New Jersey: Sports betting and igaming growth offset land-based decline in July

Year-on-year growth across sports wagering and igaming in New Jersey offset a 6.1% decline in revenue from the Garden State’s land-based market during July.
Total market revenue in July amounted to $547.8m (£423.4m/€496.7m) according to New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement figures. This is 8.2% more than $506.2m in New Jersey last year and also 11.6% more than June this year.

Of all igaming revenue, $192.8m was attributed to slots and table games, an increase of 26.4%. The remaining $2…

Notre Dame suspends men’s swim programme, citing gambling violations

The University of Notre Dame announced on Thursday (15 August) that it is suspending its men's swimming programme for at least one year due to widespread conduct violations, including gambling.
In a statement, the Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua said an independent investigation was launched after officials heard reports of potential misconduct. The investigation uncovered “deeply embedded” cultural issues. This included “numerous violations of NCAA rules prohibiting gambling on intercollegiate swimming and other athletic competitions”.

As a result, Notre Dame will suspend the entire programme for “at least” one academic year. There have been multiple college betting scandals, including one in Iowa, in recent years but none involving an entire team.

No individual athletes were named in the announcement. Rather, Bevacqua asserted that the “overwhelming cultural dynamic on the team necessitates a full suspension”. The team’s coaching staff is believed to be uninvolve..

Flutter beats street and won’t tax winners in the US; DraftKings backs off plan

Flutter CEO Peter Jackson said on Tuesday (13 August) that his company has no plans to follow DraftKings' lead with a winners' surcharge. The company, the market-share leader in the US, reported second-quarter results that exceeded analyst expectations and raised earnings guidance for FY2024.
DraftKings in early August announced that it will introduce a winners’ surcharge in four high-tax states beginning 1 January 2025. Industry watchers have since been waiting to see if other companies, and Flutter in particular, would follow suit.

“We have no plans to introduce a surcharge to winners,” Jackson said during the Q&A portion of the call. He then declined to entertain the issue further when others asked.

Less than an hour after the Flutter call ended, DraftKings released an announcement saying it would not move forward with the idea.

Nebraska wagering bill gets out of committee, but floor vote uncertain

On Monday (12 August) Nebraska's General Affairs Committee advanced a constitutional amendment that would put the decision of whether or not to expand gaming to include digital sports betting to the voters.
The committee voted, 5-2, to send LR3CA to the floor, but failed to advance framework legislation. If the Nebraska wagering bill passes and voters approve the ballot referendum, the legislature will be tasked with deciding what digital wagering will look like.

In addition the framework legislation, LB13, includes language that would have put the constitutional amendment on the ballot this year. Unless an exception is made, the decision won’t go to the voters until 2026.

Senator John Cavanaugh introduced a change to LR3CA before it passed. According to the Lincoln Journal-Star, Cavanaugh said the change “keeps power in the hands of the legislature, allows voters to speak on it and then lets the legislature decide once it’s legal how proscriptive you want to make it”.
