Penn launches military scholarship at Penn State Berks

US-based gaming operator Penn Entertainment announced it is creating a military scholarship at the commonwealth campus of Penn State University, Penn States Berks.

The scholarship will be endowed through a multi-year $50,000 spend, which the company frames as supporting the Berks County community where Penn’s corporate headquarters are located. The business said that the initiative was part of Penn’s ongoing commitment to support veterans and active-duty military.

The scholarship will be available to veterans, activity duty reservists or National Guard members with a “demonstrated financial need”. At present, close to 50 student veterans are enrolled at the campus.

“We are thrilled to partner with Penn State Berks on the creation of this scholarship, which further strengthens our support for the military and our local community,” said Penn”s senior vice-president of public affairs, Eric Schippers. “Penn is passionate about honouring and empowering our nation’s heroes and this schola..

Episode 15: A win in Kentucky, plus Texas, North Carolina and more

Last week the World Series of Politics asked where all the regulatory wins were in the 2023 legislative session, and, around a day after it went live, Kentucky sports betting was signed into law.

As Brendan Bussmann says, gaming tends to be the last issue for lawmakers to consider in the session and this year is no different. Earlier in the session Kentucky looked like a “sleeper state”, Brandt Iden says, making it a great win for the session.

Kentucky sports betting’s passage was “a classic case of bipartisanship”, he adds, with the governor, Republicans and Democrats coming together to make it happen.

Missouri and North Carolina sports betting set for photo finish?

Next up is North Carolina, a state with tribal sports betting already live, where a bill to expand the market is working its way through the legislature.

Brendan is increasingly bullish on the Tar Heel State. He says attitudes on gaming are changing as more southern states look at legislation, with more efforts to..

Not such a special one: The Premier League shirt “ban”

Following news of the Premier League gambling sponsorship ban, Jon Bruford queries whether this is at best belated and at worst ineffective.

In an unsurprising move, the English Premier League has collectively agreed to remove gambling sponsorship from the front of clubs’ match day shirts.

For those not interested in sports, this is football (soccer) and the Premier League is one of the most watched professional leagues of any sport, anywhere in the world.

This will certainly be met with smiles by most of the industry’s critics but, let’s face it, this is a largely pointless move made by the league so they don’t lose all the revenue from gambling. It’s placatory at best, pointless at worst. Why?

That’s a great question and one I’m glad you asked. But where do we begin?

The gambling industry – and its critics – has recognised that advertising around sport is potentially a problem for quite a while. Even those industry guardians the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) have stood astr..

Beter to move distribution in-house

Content and data provider Beter will move its content distribution system in-house as part of a new strategy to strengthen and expand its operator partnerships.

The basketball, MMA, esports, table tennis and igaming content supplier said that it wants to have greater control over the distribution of its content among its network of operator partners.

Beter has enjoyed “incredible success” in recent months, it explained, and intends to strengthen its existing partnerships, as well as work with more tier-one brands globally.

“We have made the strategic decision to take more control over the distribution of our content,” said Beter CEO Gal Ehrlich. “This decision is not a reflection of the incredible work our partner has done on our behalf, but rather an opportunity to align our distribution strategies with our long-term goals.

“We are confident that by taking a more active role in the distribution of our content, we will be better positioned to deliver on our commitment to provide t..

Prophet Exchange receives over $10 million in funding

New-Jersey based betting exchange, Prophet Exchange (Prophet), has acquired over $10.0m in funding to advance its peer-to-peer, high frequency exchange.

The company is backed by funds from MIXI Inc, Ninjabet.com and Chicago Trading Company. In a statement by Prophet Exchange, it says the backing by these companies is “a validation for their peer-to-peer exchange model”.

In regard to the peer-to-peer model, chief operating officer and co-founder, Jake Benzaquen states that “to be frank, something has always bothered us about ‘the house always wins'”.

“At Prophet, we win only when the user wins,” Benzaquen said. “As the first pro-consumer betting exchange in the country, we believe it’s time for the house to lose a few hands.”

Prophet aims to use these funds to work towards profitibility and grow its tech offering. Additionally, it is to develop consumer-based functions such as increased liquidity, growing the roster of events and offering smart-wallet technology.

US: Gaming “significantly” more diverse than workforce

A new report by the American Gaming Association (AGA) has revealed that the gaming sector is “significantly” more diverse than the US workforce as a whole.

According to the trade association, 61% of employees in the gaming sector are racial minorities compared to 52% of the broader hospitality industry and 42% of the total US workforce.

This comprises the 23% of those working in hospitality coming from Hispanic backgrounds, and the 19% who are black, both of which is above the total US workforce in general, and in line with the hospitality industry in specific. The 14% of employees who are of Asian descent means that the group is over-represented in the sector at around twice the national average.

The gaming sector is now “significantly” more diverse than both the hospitality sector and the US workforce as a whole

“Consumers, policymakers and investors are raising their expectations for all businesses on how they contribute to society beyond the bottom line,” said AGA president an..
