Sportradar and Genius slapped with patent suit

Panda Interactive has filed two separate lawsuits in the Texas Eastern District Court accusing Genius Sports and Sportradar of patent infringement.

The suits claim Sportradar and Genius, which are both Panda competitors, implemented the company’s video streaming technology patents without authorisation.

Panda said it had developed several patents in the live data and content streaming verticals. These include technology that allows viewers to see live odds and place a bet while watching sports.

The company say competitors have “widely copied” its patents in the streaming market generally, and even more so in the online sports betting market.

“We have made substantial investments in the development of our technology and cannot tolerate having our patented technology used unfairly by others and against us,” said Panda chairman Donald Schupak.

“No one wants to see their own arsenal used against them in battle.”

Episode 22: A home run for sports betting in Missouri?

On the 22nd episode of the World Series of Politics, Brendan Bussmann and Robin Harrison are joined by Mike Whittle, senior vice-president and general counsel of the St Louis Cardinals, to discuss the development of sports betting in Missouri.

Multiple attempts to legalise sports betting in Missouri have fallen flat over the years. Two of the most recent attempts involved Senate Bill 30 and House Bill 556, which progressed somewhat before being struck down or fizzling out.

But change could be on the horizon. The St Louis Cardinals is part of a coalition of professional sports teams in Missouri that filed new petitions last month to bring sports betting to the Show-Me state.

“We’ve been trying and using our best efforts to move this thing along in the legislative process for some time now,” says Whittle. “It was pretty much on the league level initially to push it in the early years.

The St Louis Cardinals, along with other professional sports teams, filed petitions in Missouri last..

Paddy Power closes 21 shops in Ireland

Flutter UK and Ireland has closed 21 Paddy Power shops in the Republic of Ireland, affecting 78 members of staff.

The list of affected shops includes Dominick Street Galway, Kilkenny, Rathdrum and Templemore. In a statement, Flutter said the decision to close consisted of two main facets – lease expiries and early terminations. It added the decision came after a review into its “high street estate”.

Paddy Power is among Flutter’s biggest brands in the UK and Ireland, alongside Betfair and Sky Bet.

Flutter stated that the closures leave 230 active Paddy Power shops across the Republic of Ireland.

Flutter added that the “majority” of the 78 members of staff would be offered redeployment across Paddy Power’s remaining shops. However, it admitted that the closures would lead to a “small number” of job losses.

“As with all businesses in the retail sector, we regularly review our estate to ensure we are operating efficiently and meeting the evolving needs of our customers,” said David N..
