With NFL kickoff approaching, US sportsbooks gear up for ‘No 1 acquisition” opportunity

Fanatics Sportsbook and FanDuel are the first major US sportsbooks to announce marketing offers ahead of the NFL season. Both are revisiting past successful campaigns in an effort to land new customers.
The lead-up to NFL kickoff is the biggest customer acquisition opportunity of the year for US sportsbooks.

“Football is always the most competitive season,” FanDuel CEO Amy Howe told Yahoo Finance ahead of the 2022 NFL season. “It is the number one acquisition moment for, candidly, all sports betting operators.”

Traditionally, the NFL season accounts for 35% of US sportsbook revenue, according to multiple sources. It is then, by definition, the time of year with the highest customer-acquisition spend. For the period of 1 September 2023-26 December 2023, the Public Gaming Research Institute reported that US sportsbooks spent $237.8m on television advertising. For the same time period, Pennsylvania’s wagering operators claimed about $117m in promotional credits.

SuperBook shuts down in eight states

Late Friday (19 July) SuperBook Sports became the latest casualty in the digital sports betting world when it shut down in eight states. The company, which has its flagship retail sportsbook at the Westgate in Las Vegas, remains live online in Nevada.

In an 8.38pm ET tweet, the company announced that it had shuttered its platforms in Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia at 8pm ET on Friday. SuperBook is the fourth platform to wind down operations this year.

Prophet Exchange, SaharaBets and Unibet all closed earlier in 2024. Like those three, SuperBook was unable to capture significant market share in any state outside of Nevada.

SuperBook is known for its massive retail location in Nevada and its NFL SuperContests. SuperBook had plans to offer the contests in other states. But it could not bring in players outside of Nevada without violating the Wire Act. However, plans to offer similar contests locally did not materialise.

SuperBook launches online sports betting in Iowa

Las Vegas-based sports wagering business SuperBook Sports, owned by Westgate, has launched online sports betting in the state of Iowa.

Players in the state can download the official SuperBook app or place bets on a range of sports and events via the operator’s website.

The launch means SuperBook’s reach now extends to six states, with the operator also live in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Jersey and Tennessee, with further roll-outs planned in other states.

In August, SuperBook also announced it was to open a new retail sportsbook at Oriole Park at Camden Yards ballpark, the home of Maryland-based MLB franchise the Baltimore Orioles.

“From the Cyclones and Hawkeyes to the Field of Dreams, Iowa has one of the best sports traditions in the country,” SuperBook chief executive Mark Lipparelli said. “Many sports fans from Iowa have undoubtedly visited our iconic Las Vegas sportsbook and now they can access those same great betting options from home.”

SuperBook to launch retail sportsbook at Orioles stadium

Sports betting operator SuperBook Sports has announced a new partnership with MLB team the Baltimore Orioles that will involve the building of a retail sportsbook sports lounge at the club’s Oriole Park at Camden Yards ballpark.

SuperBook does not currently have a Maryland sports wagering licence and the deal will be the operator’s first foray into the state’s regulated sports betting market. As such, the partnership will be subject to the relevant approvals from the Maryland Lottery & Gaming Control Commission (MLGCC).

Active in Nevada since 1986, SuperBook’s online brand has expanded as sports betting has grown to other states. In June, the operator expanded into Tennessee through a platform partnership with International Game Technology (IGT).

TJ Brightman, Orioles chief revenue officer lauded the deal in a statement: “The Orioles are thrilled to partner with SuperBook to enhance our gameday experience with the introduction of their first-ever on-premise sports lounge,” he said.
