Svenska Spel targets high school athletes in latest match-fixing campaign

Svenska Spel is taking a hardline stance on match-fixing by joining forces with various local sports associations to launch a new awareness campaign.
The ‘My match’ campaign warns match-fixing is the biggest threat to sport today. It urges those involved in sport to “say no” to manipulation and report any incidences.

Sweden’s Basketball Association, E-sports Association, Ice Hockey Association, Tennis Association and Football Association are involved in the initiative.

It is largely targeting high school athletes hoping to influence them to speak up if they are aware of any manipulation taking place. Various campaign videos will be shown in schools and at referee meetings across the various sporting associations involved.

Swedish memorandum would strengthen match-fixing battle

A memorandum proposed by Sweden's government would grant greater powers to process and share data related to suspected match-fixing.

If passed, the memorandum would amend chapter 17, section 8 of Sweden’s Gaming Act by allowing licensed operators to process personal data on players if they suspect match-fixing is taking place.

The proposed changes would also allow for more information to be exchanged between Sweden’s gambling regulator (Spelinspektionen), licensees and sports associations if match-fixing is suspected.

However, the memorandum notes that a player’s “personal data” would only be processed under certain circumstances. These include if the data would determine which sporting event might have been affected by match-fixing and the amount of influence the suspected match-fixing might have had.

Kambi pens multichannel sportsbook deal with Svenska Spel

Sports betting solutions provider Kambi Group has entered into a long-term, multichannel sportsbook partnership with Swedish operator Svenska Spel Sport & Casino.

Under the deal, Kambi will use its Complete sports betting product to power Svenska Spel’s online and retail sportsbooks. Kambi subsidiary Shape Games will also power the front end of the operator’s new sportsbook.

Kambi says it expects the new agreement to have a meaningful financial impact from the second half of 2024.

Founded in 1997, state-owned Svenska Spel has both an online presence and runs a network of approximately 5,000 retail outlets. Svenska Spel selected Kambi as its new sports betting partner after the tender process.

ATG chief slams bonuses as “embarrassing”

Hasse Lord Skarplöth, CEO of Swedish state-affiliated horse racing operator ATG, has said that bonuses are “embarrassing” and “drive gambling addiction” in a blistering critique of the common industry practice.

Bonuses are the practice of offering free or extra bets to consumers in order to attract or retain players to their platforms; with the method sometimes coming under criticism as an inducement that helps contribute to negative social responsibility outcomes.

Sweden has a stringent bonus regime, only allowing operators to offer one bonus per player at sign-up, worth no more than SEK100. This has been criticised by the Swedish Moderate Party – which have called for the rules to be reformed:
