Rounding up some of the latest monthly sports betting results in the US, iGB takes a look at how Indiana, Iowa and Delaware performed in September. Delaware also reported igaming numbers.

Revenue and handle growth in Indiana

Starting in Indiana, consumers spent $483.8m (£369.5m/€443.5m) betting on sports during September. This is 19.7% more than the same month last year and 57.1% ahead of August this year.

American football drew the most sports bets at $175.4m, driven by the start of the NFL and college football seasons. Baseball ranked second with $54.5m, while parlay bets totalled $164.4m.

The Indiana Gaming Commission also reported taxable adjusted gross revenue (AGR) in September reached $53.0m. This beats last year’s total by 29.0% and August by 65.1%.

As such, Indiana was left with a state-wide hold of 10.95% for the month.

DraftKings remains the market leader. It posted $19.3m in revenue off a $190.3m handle for a hold of 10.14%. FanDuel remains second with $18.2m from $148.4m and a 12.26% hold.

Iowa hold reaches 10.15%

Looking now to Iowa, where monthly handle in September reached $270.9m. The figure is 10.2% ahead of last year and 62.2% up from August this year.

Online betting spend in September topped $252.3m, with retail sportsbook handle reaching $18.6m. This is according to data from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission.

In terms of sports betting net receipts, the total for in Iowa in September was $27.5m. This is 14.1% higher year-on-year and 74.1% above August.

Revenue from online betting amounted to $24.5m, with retail’s share at $2.9m. State-wide hold for September stood at 10.15%.

As has been the case for some time in Iowa, DraftKings remains at the top of the pack. It took $10.8m in revenue from $108.4m in bets for a 9.96% hold. FanDuel was again second with $6.9m in revenue from $64.3m handle for a 10.73% hold. BetMGM recorded revenue of $1.7m off $19.8m handle for a hold of 8.59%.

Delaware has strong month

We complete our betting round-up in Delaware, where total wagering spend in September was $23.2m, the highest since December 2018, and the fourth-highest handle in state history. This is 205.3% more than last year and 125.2% ahead of August, according to the Delaware Lottery.

Revenue was $3.0m, the highest this year. This beats last year by 209.4% and is also 322.4% more than August’s total.

In terms of hold, for the whole of Delaware in September, this stood at 12.93%.

Delaware Park led the market with revenue of $1.2m from a $13.0m handle for a 9.23%. In second was Harrington Raceway on $383,207 from $4.0m, leaving an 8.94% hold. Bally’s Dover placed third with $263,554 off $2.1m for a 12.50% hold.

A further $1.1m in revenue came from $4.2m in bets placed with retailers in Delaware.

Delaware igaming revenue up YoY

The Delaware Lottery also reported data for the state’s igaming sector.

In September, total spend across the online gambling market was $170.6m, a 334.1% year-on-year rise and 3.8% higher than August. This total includes $96.2m in igaming video bets and $74.5m worth of internet table game wagers.

In terms of revenue, this hit $5.8m, which surpasses last year by 427.3%. Igaming video drew $4.1m in revenue and table games $1.7m.

Delaware Park also claimed first place in this sector with $2.8m in revenue. Bally’s Dover was second on $1.7m and then Harrington Raceway with $1.3m.
